Mom
1963.
You
Are standing sheepishly
In front
Of the boardinghouse.
You
Before me
Before him
Before this life you accepted
In the midst of strangers.
In the midst of strangeness
You are beautiful
Flawless
Gleaming white face
And those huge eyes.
They could only be
Blue-
-An innocence displaced
By an equal volume of water.
But
this photo
Is black and white
And
Isn’t in our family album.
I finally saw
You
In a shoe box
Hidden
Under your bed.
1963.
You
Are standing sheepishly
In front
Of the boardinghouse.
You
Before me
Before him
Before this life you accepted
In the midst of strangers.
In the midst of strangeness
You are beautiful
Flawless
Gleaming white face
And those huge eyes.
They could only be
Blue-
-An innocence displaced
By an equal volume of water.
But
this photo
Is black and white
And
Isn’t in our family album.
I finally saw
You
In a shoe box
Hidden
Under your bed.

Your mother was right - you are an artist. A lot of us cried when you went to pharmacy... now we are smiling with you. Cause you are coming back to us. No more purple haze.
